The Notre Dame Band was on hand for the first football game
with the University of Michigan in 1887 and has played for every home game since.
2007 marks the band's 120th football season.
Formed in 1845, the University of Notre Dame Band is in it 160th year of continuous
service to the University, making it the nation's oldest university band. (not
to mention most recognizable!)
The Notre Dame Band includes students from accross the United States and around
the world. The Notre Dame Victory March was first performed in 1908.
The March, composed by John and Michael Shea (Notre Dame students), has become
one of the most recognized, and copied college fight songs ever. In a
recent evaluation of the nation's greatest fight songs, USA Today ranked Notre
Dame's as the Best College Fight Song in existence! In a recent Harris
Poll, the Notre Dame football team was also ranked as the most recognizable,
and revered college football team.
The Trumpets are but one section in the full 380-member University of Notre
Dame Marching Band. As the largest and best section, we
have a lot to uphold. However, thanks to the dedication and hard work of each
and every member, we can hold our own against any opponent.
The Trumpets anchor the Band of the Fighting Irish, with our marching, our playing,
and our pride. The Trumpets are the only members of the Band who march with
a consistent level of excellence. When we march, all knees are up, all backs
are straight, our stern faces never crack, and our shouts can be heard for miles.
We have a sense of pride. When the Notre Dame Band marches by, with our quasi-military
uniforms and the traditional marching band style that Notre Dame created,
the Trumpets can always be heard, both when playing and when shouting to rally
their fellow students and cheer the team on to victory. Many Trumpets are calm
or even shy when not in Band. But in Band or as a group, we are loud, proud,
crude, rude, and we look damn good when we march - at once hated and envied
by the rest of the Band.
